At Elk, 17 miles south of Mendocino, you can wander the black sands of driftwood-filled Greenwood State Beach. I’ve been there twice, and the next time I’m in the Klamath area, I’ll go again. On to Fort Bragg, 10 miles north of Mendocino. The city’s Noyo Harbor has been rough around the edges for decades, but now there’s new energy in this damp netherworld. For an upscale overnight, try the Noyo Harbor Inn, built in the 1860s and reopened after a painstaking rehab in 2017. Or eat at the inn’s HarborView Bistro. Some newer residents say they made their way to Mendocino coast for a visit and its natural beauty compelled them to stay.

They give you just about everything you need minus a washer/dryer. You can tell they care about giving you a good experience with all of the small touches... I can’t imagine staying anyplace else while visiting Morro Bay. Our ocean view room was spacious and updated; there were all the amenities we needed to be very comfortable, and we got the best sleep of our lives on the comfy bed. Another big plus was the staff – they are welcoming, and helpful.

The location can’t be beaten; the friendly staff recommended some great restaurants, and our room was beautiful. We enjoyed walking to several of the nearby places we wanted to see. It was a great way to see the area up close and meet the friendly locals. Klamath River Overlook, at the end of Requa Road in Klamath, offers the region’s best and broadest view of the river as it empties into the sea. From that overlook, you can hike a steep trail (one mile down and back) that takes you toward the water.
